The Kuwaiti criminal court on April 1, 2018 has sentenced a Lebanese man and his Syrian wife to death by hanging for killing their Filipina maid.
In the absentia in the first hearing in the case of Joanna Demafelis, the 29-year-old maid whose body was found in a freezer in Kuwait earlier this year the court issued the sentence, a judicial source said.
The Lebanese man, identified as Nader Essam Assaf, admitted killing the maid a year ago. Following that, the General Attorney in Lebanon filed the necessary charges against the male suspect.
Last February, the Lebanese-Syrian couple was arrested in Damascus, Syria following an Interpol manhunt.
Assaf was then referred to justice authorities in Southern Lebanon because he is a resident of Saidon, a city in Southern Lebanon, while his Syrian wife Mona Hassoun remained in the custody of Damascus authorities.
Philippine Ambassador Renato Pedro Villa declined to comment on the verdict but said that the Philippines would wait for the extradition of the couple.
