Never forget sacrifices of veterans – Senators to Filipinos

Senators reminded Filipinos to honor and value the sacrifices of war veterans.

In her message for the Day of Valor and Philippine Veterans’ Week, Sen. Grace Poe called on Filipinos to commemorate and salute the country’s veterans who “exemplified true patriotism and gallantry for our democracy.”

“Time and again, we have faced challenges and threats that displayed genuine courage of the Filipinos—the soldiers in Marawi City, the SAF 44, peacekeepers, crime fighters, ordinary civilians who guard their communities,” Poe said in her statement.

“And, there are those who are fighting not the enemies in the battlefield but hunger, poverty, homelessness, ignorance, greed, injustice,” she said.

Poe pointed out that “history calls upon use to live out the same courage and bravery of our forefathers by doing our duties as channels of peace, builders of society, movers of economy and generators of ideas.”

“Let us forever be grateful to the Filipino veterans for our hard-won liberties, and let us not waver in our resolve to continue what they started,” she said.

Likewise, Senator Joel Villanueva stressed the need to “remember our valiant soldiers who lost their lives for our own.”

“Araw ng Kagitingan further reminds us to be brave and courageous amid the oppressors,” Villanueva said.

“Our veteran soldiers withstood hunger, thirst and fatigue to walk the Death March. This is a proof that the Filipino spirit does not falter in the face of struggle,” he added.

He was referring to the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese army of Filipino and American prisoners of war from Saysain Point in Bagac, Bataan to Camp O’Donnell in Capas Tarlac.

“Let us not forget the sacrifices of our fellow Filipinos and make it as an inspiration for all of us,” he said.
