With numerous members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) laying down their arms recently, the Philippine government is pinning on high hopes on winning the war against the rebels, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said.
“We are winning the war finally. There are many front in Mindanao that have collapsed, especially on the eastern side, particularly Davao and Agusan,” President Duterte said.
“If God will be merciful, this will be over by about the second quarter of next year. There are many of them surrendering,” President Duterte said.
President Duterte said.the CPP-NPA orgnization is on the brink of collapse. He said he knew all of these from intelligence personnel who have information about communist rebels and leaders who have surrendered.
The President earlier reached out to Communist Party of the Philippines founding chairman Jose Maria Sison to return home and talk peace. But there was a stalemate in the talks because Sison wanted a coalition government.
For the peace talks to be held in the PhilippinesDuterte said he was still open to the resumption of peace talks but Sison had to comply with his conditions. Such conditions include the desistance of CPP-NPA in collecting revolutionary taxes and cessation of hostilities, among others.
The President promised to provide housing and livelihood opportunities for rebels who will return to the folds of the law.
