Iloilo City, a highly-urbanized city (HUC) in Western Visayas is throwing support to the efforts of the national government to put an end to the local communist armed conflict.
City stakeholders gathered on Wednesday for the nationwide simultaneous people’s support rally and peace covenant signing and support to Executive Order (EO) 70 at Barangay Veterans Village gymnasium.
EO 70 calls for the adoption of the whole-of-nation approach and the creation of task force to end the local communist armed conflict.
“It shows that all sectors of the government are condemning the presence of the CPP-NPA (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army) because for five decades their issues are almost the same. Every time there is new leadership, they oppose it. It no longer has a sense for them to continue their cause because in the first place there is no cause,” said Col. Martin Defensor Jr. in a phone interview on Thursday.
He added that the communist terrorists are just throwing issues against the government but if they will be given a chance to run and serve as public servants, they could not also perform their mandate.
Following the signing, Defensor hoped that the cascading and exposing of the “evils of communism” will be done down to the grassroots.
“The people should realize the effect of communism in a country. The role of the basic unit of society is to explain to the people the reality about communism,” he added.
Meanwhile, Defensor said that he will continue to lobby for the city government to declare the CPP-NPA as persona non grata.
“I’m still waiting for the resolution of the council. Mayor (Jerry) Treñas is really supporting EO 70. He was there yesterday and made a strongly worded comment against communism,” he said.
The request was submitted to the city government more than a month ago.
Nonetheless, he expressed that there are no areas in the city under the influence of communist terrorists although there are some who are supportive of leftist activities. They were also able to identify areas where those personalities are staying.
“Those personalities who sympathize with the leftist are open, they are doing rallies and other left-leaning activities,” he said. (PNA)
