Troops of the Philippine Army’s 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion commemorated the third anniversary of the Marawi Siege in a simple celebration at Barangay Sigapod, Midsalip, Zamboanga Del Sur.
Personnel from 14th Division Reconnaissance Company (14DRC), 1st Light Armor Company (1LAC), and 1st Field Artillery Battalion (1FAB), who were placed OPCON (operational control) to 53rd IB in the ongoing Focused Military Operations against Communist-Terrorist Groups (CTGs) in Zamboanga Del Sur, participated in the simple commemoration program.
The Marawi City crisis started on May 23, 2017, when lawless elements of ISIS-Maute Terrorist Group laid siege of the Islamic City. The crisis formally ended after about five months when President Rodrigo Duterte proclaimed Marawi City ‘liberated’ on October 17, 2017.
The battle is dubbed as one of the longest urban battles in recent Philippine History.
In his talk to men, 53IB Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera reminded the sacrifices and heroism of the Army during the battle of Marawi.
“The Marawi Crisis continues to serve as an inspiration to all of us, in providing peace and development for the people and the country,” said Lt. Col. Herrera.
“Let us not forget to look into the lessons of the past but with the future in mind,” Lt. Col. Herrera said.
The 53IB committed one of its line companies during the battle of Marawi.
