Battle for Marawi: Civilians suffer while army battles ISIS militants in Philippines

“They’d break into houses and shops and kill all the Christians.”

On May 23, 2017, two militant groups, Maute and Abu Sayaf fighting for an independent Islamic state, captured the city of Marawi in the Philippines. A siege ensued, and locals had no food, or water, and were forced to leave their homes. Lots of civilians and soldiers died.
