Army condemns terrorism spate in Basilan

ILIGAN CITY – Philippine Army Commanding General Rolando Joselito Bautista strongly condemned in the strongest term the recent spate of terrorism transpired in Basilan that killed 11 persons including the bomber.

“The bombing attempt was clearly meant to create atrocities and terror attack in the peace loving city of Basilan. Had it not for the vigilance of our soldiers and Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit Active Auxiliaries (CAAs) manning the checkpoint, it could have passed through and perhaps inflicted more casualties,” Bautista said.

“With this, I commend the soldiers and CAAs for their decisive action that resulted to the foiling of of possible more disastrous incident at the expense of their lives. Terrorism is real and just within our midst. Hence, I urge everyone to join our effort to prevent and counter violent extremism,” Bautista said.

“Security is a shared responsibility and that’s what we want people to understand and exercise,” Bautista said.

The incident is now under investigation to determine who are behind this terror act. “The Philippine Army will continue its security operations and carry out its mandate to protect and serve the people towards peace and prosperity,” Bautista said. (Chrystal Villalobos,
